The North Berkshire School Union’s Office of Pupil Services looks to provide an opportunity for equal access for all by providing services for children who are found eligible for special education services. These services are provided as a result of a disability which impacts the child's ability to access the general education curriculum. These services may include accommodations and modifications which occur in the general education classroom setting, or specialized instruction occurring in a special education classroom.
Our special education program meets the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law originally signed in 1975, by President Gerald Ford and which has been reauthorized by congress in 2004, and amended in 2015 through the Every Student Succeeds Act. This law makes available a free and appropriate education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation. This law ensures special education and related services to those children. The disability categories that are described in IDEA include:
Autism
Developmental Delay
Intellectual Impairment
Sensory Impairment
Neurological Impairment
Physical Impairment
Health Impairment
Specific Learning Disability
